The first half of the game is endless repetition, both in gameplay and story. You do the same arch five times with minor differences. The gameplay "expands" as you unlock new abilities, but fairly early on that starts to slowdown and then you just do the same thing over and over in every battle, except boss fights where you spam Reigning Slash. Somewhat mitigated if you play as Rinwell as her comboing has some complexity to it, but for everyone else, that's how it goes. There's like 7 bosses that aren't mindless monsters who are skinswaps of regular encounters in that part of the game. There's a lack of an antagonistic presence outside of the abstract "Sauron's eye" of the level boss Lord. Everything is painfully formulaic. And then the second half is just the worst thing ever. I won't even go into detail as to how dumb and anti-climatic it is. It's a fairly popular position so I imagine others have argued for it. As a fan of Symphonia it's bitterly disappointing how it intentionally runs with that same division motif and cocks it up. Looking back, the only time I was really enjoying myself was in the first two realms before the combat got too stale and I was still enamoured by the gorgeous visuals, which are indeed a treat to traverse through, so it got that right at least. After that only getting a new character and having fun learning them really brought that feeling back. And of course it has the worst DLC practice in a game I've ever played, constantly nawing at you when you boot the game up, or you're having a moment of respite. Nevermind that the character customizability is clearly hampered to sell that stuff as DLC, which includes further access to combat skills. Basically a "fun" tax. I've also never played a game that has more typos than Arise.

Yet the free costumes, for how much they hammer you with suggestions to buy the DLC, are still better than the Berseria offerings. Berseria had Katz costumes and maybe one alternate costume per character. At least Arise had pallette swaps for costumes. Kind of wish Aiphen kept his half mask for the rest of the game. His full face is way too boring.
