Holocaust denial in the US began with father of the neo-nazi movement George Lincoln Rockwell. He was a WW2 veteran in the European theater who had actually witnessed a death camp being liberated. However, he denied it had happened through a letter in a gentlemen's magazine of all places. He even made up fake sources to back himself up so that he sounded knowledgeable. In later correspondences with other antisemites, he admitted that his reason for spreading misinformation was that society was turning against antisemitism precisely due to the horrors of the Holocaust.

I'd advise you to look for the episode about him on the podcast "Behind the Bastard". A lot of techniques the alt-right use today came from Rockwell. For example, things like Ben Shapiro debating inexperienced college students on campuses to bolster right-wing concepts like race-realism in the public eye.
