If it was a lets all move into this place together at the start with it being 3 people clearly going 33/33/33 would make more sense. But lets say the couple lived there first and then a 3rd roommate joined them. I could see the couple saying hey we are 50% you are the other 50%. The new guy is still getting a discount compared to going alone in a place and they are now also getting a discount.
