Maybe when they said "should have", they just meant you could've pulled off Yao Ming better than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Which maybe you could have -- even if you didn't want to, because what actually mattered to you more was playing one of your heroes. But maybe they thought they were giving you a great suggestion in case what you cared about was looking the part. Maybe "should have" didn't really mean, "stick to your own kind and know your place" after all.
