I would generally say that SMT actually shouldn't have "better" characters because the whole point of the series is aligning yourself with worldviews and/or philosophies, with the characters just serving as encapsulations of those broader ideas. If they were personalized to the point that you were on someone's team just because you find them charismatic I think it would weaken the themes that make the series work to begin with.
