The events of the movie are slightly different to what's described in the show (she doesn't burn down the gym in the movie, for example). The show is clearly meant to follow from something but it's not quite the movie we saw. I vaguely remember something about the show following on from Whedon's original script for the movie rather than the version that the studio eventually put out after some interference, but I don't remember where I read that or how true it is.
