South park said it best, either it's all okay or none of it is. Then again they're hypocrites, they made that episode about Muhamad and Comedy Central pulled it because they feared the backlash and rather than stick to their guns and make even more offensive episodes, they bowed to the network censors and still make seasons to this day, money trumps ideals for Matt and Trey yet they're always happy to preach at other people.

I think context and execution is important.

Technically any subject can be joked about but that doesn't mean that you're going to get a good reception just because it's a joke. Comedy isn't a shield. Like everything else it's open for criticism.

I'm not saying that specifically about Chapelle or anything but it's always been like this really. Comedians who whine about their audience probably aren't really thinking about it correctly.
