This is the classic case of provoking someone into a reaction. Yes, the people who responded are absolutely responsible for their own actions, but it doesn't absolve a person who provoked them as completely harmless.

And yes, I believe that wading into the middle of a protest with a sign counter-protesting is an act of provocation. This is why protests and counter-protests are separated in practice.

And further it speaks to Netflix's lack of commitment to security for its employees. They knew the walkout was happening and while the protest appeared to take place on public ground outside the building, I would think they'd want to take steps to make sure altercations don't happen, for their own optics, if nothing else.
