Aligators are not crocodiles, they almost never attack people.

He could have died from hypothermia/exposition to the elements.

The statistics on alligator attacks are a little misleading given how different the habitat overlap is with alligators. You are extremely unlikely to be attacked by an alligator. This assumes you don't go wading into an alligator swamp on the regular.

That said I think the more likely scenario at this point is he drowned.
