Hollywood doesn't like taking risks and sometimes it's more "how can we sell this movie?" than it is "how can we tell the best, freshest story?" Joker sells. Penguin sells. Two-Face, Catwoman, Riddler... I think we're seeing artists like James Gunn and shit now who understand the source material better and can maybe convince producers to take a chance financing a lesser known property because of the potential to build an audience around it... But it's still an uphill battle, I bet.
