When I used to make coffee, I would normally do 1 scoop of grounds for every 2 cups of water used.

I believe the notches on the side of the coffee pot represent 2 cups of water for each notch. Cups as in the measurement ratio, not the size of the cup you are using.

8 ounces of water equals 1 cup. Tea cups are usually designed to hold around 8 ounces, or 1 cup of water. Coffee mugs usually hold about 16 ounces or 2 cups of water.

The main trick is to figure out how much coffee your mug holds, and how much you drink in the day, and then prepare your coffee using the ratios above.
