Ok, finished Startropics.

This was a replay for me; this was a nostalgic game from my childhood, one I'd purchased for like, 10$ at a closing KB toys. I even had the original letter which I recall dipping in water, but lost it after my first playthrough, making me have to guess the frequency in chapter 4 to go on going forward. (of course there's the internet nowadays

As far as NES games go; it's one I'd recommend, though it does suffer from some products of its time and the games it's trying to put a unique spin on. Starting with three hearts on every death is a product of its time, but at least there's ample hearts in later chapters to fill up your health with. Which is incredibly necessary given the whole "you can only use your upgraded weapons if you have enough red hearts" thing... which makes bad luck or poor play snowball really fast.

Chapter ranking: 6>7>>>3>2>8>1>5>>>>>>>>4

6 is the best; a lot of bosses, two tough dungeons; two big hearts making it worth it to take a little time to explore. The big-headed walking around minibosses are the true boss for this chapter; the twin statues are basically an afterthought after.

7's remixed theme is fantastic; and the stages really have that different feel to them; they are definitely tough. And there's some interesting robot bosses here too.

3 is a very expansive chapter; something like four or five dungeons, most of them fair; though the ghost village for first time players with all the stairs out is probably a bit too troll-y for this day and age I like it still.

2 is a good chapter everyone likes saving animals, and the octo was always my fave early boss of the game.

8 caps off the game pretty effectively; though having to face zoda at 3 hearts right at the entrance was sure... a choice by the designers. Can't knock them too badly for the other two boss fights though, they're great.

1, there's nothing really wrong with 1 (besides the instant deathtrap above the second potion room) but I don't like the snake boss that much.

5 is kind of an annoying chapter with the deathtraps; the backtracking for peter's gift, and it doesn't even give us a cool ghost pirate boss (or any boss at all) to cap the experience.

4 is easily the worst of the lot; a maze is the entire gameplay.

Final thoughts; still recommend it highly despite its NES-isms
