They're both equally bad, but different. Show pics? I think if they literally just stretched out the image without cropping, it would look so bad that it wouldn't even be presentable. So instead they do whatever cropping and stretching they have to to make it look presentable in 16:9. I just quickly looked at an episode on Netflix and it definitely looks stretched out.
