Bigfoot might have existed, but only as an ape that escaped from a roadside zoo or something. If the ape had been there illegally, its escape would not have been reported. I could see the poor animal dying of malnutrition and its body decomposing unseen by human eyes or its remains being eaten by the local wildlife. It wouldn't be anything for a truck driver to spot a chimpanzee or orangutan crossing the road and unknowingly exaggerate its height.
