In which case, I can't imagine actually developing a strong enough relationship with the SO before they made the ultimatum where I'd ever willingly side with them. Part of the process of falling in love/committing to someone in the first place would involve learning whether or not they're happy with/willing to tolerate pets (and by pets, I specifically mean dogs). Though I have a visceral negative reaction to ultimatums and emotional blackmail in general, even when pets aren't involved. My instinctive response to "Either [x] goes or I go!" is "Well then don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, asshole." I view that sort of mentality as a blatant lack of respect, and it's a strong red flag for a toxic relationship. I've actually ended relationships over emotional blackmail in the past. Part of why I'm happy in my current relationship is because we both have more respect for each other than that and don't pull that sort of shit with each other. I agree. I'm not big on ultimatums... And I don't think many people are big on being emotionally blackmailed...
