I'm sorry, but I think it's time we all stopped lying to ourselves on this one. Western animation, or AMERICAN animation as what is usually contextually emphasized, has NOTHING on Japanese animation. You just ain't going to find the level of variation to go from Lucky Star, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam, Death Note, Monster, & Cowboy Bebop within American animation, unless you include things like the DCAU & premium stuff like Netflix/Amazon originals. The rest of American animation is either kids stuff or another Simpsons clone, when it comes to adult animation.
My comment was in regards to shows made for all ages, not just for kids, or adults specifically. And while western shows don't have much in regards to certain genres that doeasnt mean its shows aren't vastly different still. Ed edd n eddy, courage the cowardly dog, adventure time, Steven universe, gravity falls, Ben ten, Jimmy neutron, and so on.

And don't even get me started on Disney and Pixar movies.

I think people overrate most anime by alot based on the exceptional shows, and conflate it to Japanese animation as a whole. When in reality the vast majority of it is either forgetful shovelware, fan service herem trash, merchandising fronts or try hard pseudo intellectual garbage.
