I think modern equivalents often fail to capture that quality of art style / animation (and that matters potentially more than raw graphical power or the latest technical innovations).
I saw a trailer for a recent game a month or two ago that had fantastic 2D graphics. I cant remember the name of it though. It looked kind of anime inspired and I think it was a metridvania
