There are some studies that show some in vitro (lab test) activity of different antiseptics against coronavirus. For example, this 2020 study found Listerine, Iso-Betadine, and Dequonal mouthwashes to be effective against three strains of SARS-CoV-2, but this was in tissue cultures. A more recent study found that Listerine and Chlorhexidine disrupted the Covid virus under lab conditions. In that study, Both Povidone iodine and Peroxal caused significant skin cell death in our studies, while both Listerine and Chlorhexidine had minimal skin cell killing at concentrations that simulated what would be found in daily use," according to Daniel Fine, the papers senior author.
