But the hype behind "Seven Nation Army" largely derives from the colossal sound Jack White managed to create while only using two instruments. It's as technically impressive as it was popular.

"Royals," meanwhile, signaled a new era of pop music by rejecting the glamour of the previous era while also bringing minimalism to the forefront. It was like little else before it in the pop sphere.

Neither of these songs get their hype purely from being 'fun.' There are dozens of songs every year that top the charts and get no lasting attention - there is a clear cultural difference between "Royals" and something like "Shape Of You" or "All About That Bass."
