CA is a massive state and has lots of comparatively affordable housing if you choose to live in the sticks, but for the three major areas that make up the heart of SoCal (Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego - where nearly half the state's population live), that's generally not true. The cost of housing is prohibitive there.
