In Australia the minimum wage is around $20.

When I was a bartender it was nice getting tips, but was never expected. Some nights you came up well ahead and others you got nothing (usually uni nights...).

I tip now based on service. If I got out and the waiter/waitress forgets my order, mixes up what I want or is a bit slow, I probably won't tip. If there service is ok or better they get tipped accordingly.

A tip should be a reflection on your enjoyment of the meal/service. I understand it is different in the USA though.
