| FortuneCookie 08/29/21 10:48:35 AM #1: | Oh, you killed Spider-Man? Well, you only killed red costume Spider-Man. Blue costume Spider-Man from another universe is here to take his place. There are no stakes anymore. A large part of the appeal of action movies, and the primary appeal for me, is the hero putting their life on the line. That's why I'm not a fan of Wolverine. Nothing's on the line when a character literally can't die. It's also why I prefer lone heroes to teams. If you kill Spider-Man, you win. If you kill the Thing, you have Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, and the Human Torch looking for revenge. You're still screwed. It's cool in that they can keep their promise never to reboot. They can always go and focus on a new universe or pull a character from a different universe. Chris Evans doesn't want to play superheroes anymore? Look! It's alternate universe Captain America back again. Dun-dun-d'dahhh! But again, there are no stakes anymore. If a bad guy destroys the universe, that's just Universe A. Or it might be Universe B so that the "not-reboot" can claim itself to be Universe A. ... Copied to Clipboard! |
