In a way I've lived the "to each according to their needs from each according to their abilities" life when I was enlisted in the Army. I got "free housing" in a small room I didn't choose with a roommate I didn't choose. I got "free food" in the form of a meal card that could only be used in on base dining facilities that sucked. When food and housing becomes a "gift" that is given to you rather than something you pay for then you end up losing the freedom to choose the form that gift takes. Do you want to live in a 1 bedroom apartment and spend money on vacations or do you want to buy a house and have less cash for traveling but have more space.
