Games are usually balanced around Normal Mode. Hard modes are very often untested with minimal changes.
I've noticed this trend although many games do have Hard Mode as the "true experience" like Halo.

...and?
And what?

For a first time I'll do normal so I can focus more on the story than repeating a spot 500 times just to say I beat it.
Rising Revengeance was the last game I started in Hard Mode. I can relate to repeating a spot 500 times.

I usually prefer a harder difficulty, I like a challenge. But I typically dont go for the hardest either.

like one or two steps above normal, depending on how many settings
Used to prefer challenges, but now I challenge myself to get as good as possible in the normal mode.

These days I'm starting to think I should play WRPGs on Easy. The combat usually sucks anyway, so why bother with pounding against difficulty spikes?
I save easy mode for the noobs in my life. I'll go back and play easy myself if I'm practicing or just relaxing.

If I know I will love the game: I will start on easy. Because 1st play through is for research. Easy money, easy leveling. Easy testing. 2nd playthrough is on Ultra-Nightmare mode, now that I know what path I want to take.

If I am just not sure if I will like the game, I might just start my 1 play of the game on hardest. Or just leave it on norm.
I start on normal then go to hard mode if I really liked it. For the challenge/replay.
