It's been 15 years since I played the original Baten Kaitos so my memories of it are a bit hazy, but from what I could tell Origin was better in almost every way. Having a smaller party allowed for Sagi, Guillo and Milly to be much deeper characters than the original cast. The banter between Guillo and Milly was especially great. They even did proper voice recording this time without compression so they didn't sound like they were speaking through a cardboard tube. Guillo might be the single most entertaining character of any Monolith Soft game. Milly's VA could really be over the top at times during emotional scenes though. The battle system was already good, but they made it better by having everyone share the same deck instead of individual decks. You're able to combo off eachother and set up some really big attacks and just keep things moving as quickly as it can. The BIG TWIST maybe wasn't as shocking as the first games was because they kinda telegraphed it the whole game, but it was a nice spin on the whole Guardian Spirit thing. The game uses a lot of the same locations as the first game, but just 20 years prior so you see a lot of the same locales and younger versions of characters. Music still awesome too. The new battle theme I've already heard dozens in times in the last two Smash Bros games, but also I like how normal final boss (before you do the true final boss) was also an instrumental of the Baten Kaitos 1 battle music. Anyway top notch JRPG, not just on Gamecube but in general. Would recommend if you happen to have it and haven't played it yet! --- ... Copied to Clipboard! |
