Nintendo tried with Pokemon, but they don't care about that anymore. They never go after Pokemon 34 artists (With the one exception being that doujin where Ash turns into a werewolf and rapes Pikachu). About the only company that still actively tries is Dinsey Nintendo supposedly bought the rights to a Mario porn parody in the early 90s so no more copies would be sold. Don't know if this is an urban legend or if it is actually true.
