I took it in Ghostbusters 2 that the actual ghostbusters had their 15 minutes of fame, and without actual ghosts anymore, they couldnt keep their business going. Did people actually forget about the events of 1984 in the sequel? The kid at the birthday party says his dad thinks they're 'full of crap,' so there's definitely a portion of the New York population that wants to believe the events of Ghostbusters were fake / staged.
