The best excuse I could possibly give is that ghosts being real is something the general public simply can't handle, and wants to forget and / or believe it was all just fake. I took it in Ghostbusters 2 that the actual ghostbusters had their 15 minutes of fame, and without actual ghosts anymore, they couldnt keep their business going.
