LatinX

Hey, I was curious what CE thinks about this term.

I get emails from my university about attending LatinX diversity groups. I, myself, am half hispanic and find the term relatively ridiculous, to the point where I do not attend diversity groups because of this term. My hispanic friends also agree, and think that the term amounts to white women telling hispanic people to speak their language. In other words, it's cultural imperialism.

Our arguments:

You cannot pronounce the world in Spanish. It is clear that the word has been derived in an English speaking environment, among English speaker and is for English speakers.

Second, the word it is replacing is a Spanish word. Hispanic people saying Latino are speaking Spanish. They aren't speaking English, and having English speakers trying to tell Spanish speakers to modify their language is not really appropriate. Hispanic people don't tell Americans to change their language because it doesn't align with their politics.

Third: Spanish male/female word roots is just part of the language. You can't change this.

Curious where CE lies on this matter. Hispanic issues arent discussed lately, but they are still important.
