It was announced earlier this year that the 42-year-old actress would voice Scooby-Doo character Velma Dinkley in the upcoming HBO Max animated series.
In an appearance on Late Night on Thursday (June 22), Mindy revealed to host Seth Meyers that not everyone was thrilled with her being cast.
Mindy explained that while there was lots of support about her voicing the character, some people took issue with Velma being played by an Indian actress.
People were not happy. There were a lot of so not Velma tweets. First of all, I didnt know that she elicited such strong reactions, in either direction, she said.
Shes such a great character, shes so smart. And I just couldnt understand how people couldnt imagine a really smart, nerdy girl with terrible eyesight and loved to solve mysteries could not be Indian, she continued. Like, there are Indian nerds. It shouldnt be a surprise to people.
Mindy added, It really made me think, Okay, weve got to be really careful with this character, which we will be because we really love her and shes going to have great adventures.
