Modern masculinity has only been around for a bit over a hundred years. Men being emotional was considered totally normal before then. But it's kind of a response to feminism in a way. Back in the day men and women were completely seperated in almost every aspect of life. So there was a lot less need to compete with other men for women's attention because they just weren't around eachother.

Men were also super close in a bromance way. There are lots of paintings and early photos of coworking men all close together sitting in each others laps. They didn't think of it as girly or gay because they just didn't need to question that kind of thing. Plus they didn't have much of a concept about what being gay even was so most men didn't worry about being thought of as gay or whatever because they didn't see it as an option in the first place.
