The TVA has been pruning them so they stop existing before a new Kang variant can show up. I'm guessing a nexus event is some kind of signal that indicates a timeline has potential to spawn a new Kang. Because otherwise people who die like Tony or something could still show up in some other timeline, right? Yes.
