In the early 90s I once found a comic book in a store and read it off the rack while my parents shopped. It was an origin story for both Sonic and Dr Robotnik. Robotnik used to be a nice guy and kind to all the animals. He was especially close to Sonic and they often hung out. He built the shoes Sonic wears that give him his speed. Then there was some kind of accident and Robotnik turned insane and attacked Sonic and all the animals. I'm sure it was never canon though.
