Hardly. Traded improving the combat for gimmicks like building the world map, which then became the Mana series' "thing"--random gimmicks instead of being a good action RPG.

It's beautiful, even if I don't like the art style.

It did improve the combat. It's a faster, more responsive version of SD3's combat, with light and heavy attacks, and you can actually choose what special move to use instead of it being the same one over and over based on your class.
