and debates are a tool like that. they are just conversations. regressive leftists pretend that debating is just a formal academic setting with a moderator and 15 minutes each to talk, but that's not what is really being discussed when a regressive or a subversive says debates are pointless.

One of the primary benefits of "formal academic setting debates" is the common body of research to draw upon. If you and I had an impromptu debate on the minimum wage, it's likely that we'll come to an exchange like this (assuming we're arguing opposite sides).

Me: X study says that minimum wage increase actually creates more profit for businesses because it puts money in the hands of the workers who are more likely to circle money through those businesses.
You: Ah, but Y study says that it would actually decrease profits from those businesses.

Since there's lots of contradictory research out there, it's likely I haven't read Y study and you haven't read X study. Now we're at an impasse because we have to try to live debunk materials we have never seen though neither of us are inherently qualified to do so on the fly.
