No, she knows it's not tins. She says you just call them "a soda" without specifying. And I was like what if they go to a restaurant that has soda in cans and bottles? To which she replied that you probably just specify if you want a bottle, and the default is in a can.

I think she just can't admit she was wrong and it's too late to backtrack.

Well we would say "a soda". Restaurants will bring out whatever they have. Canned sodas are usually in cheaper places. Most other restaurants have soda fountains or bottles without the option for cans.

If I'm at home and we have cans od soda I'd usually just call it a soda. If for some reason I have a 2 liter and cans then I'd specify.
