So FF1 spoilers that get revealed in this game's trailer: You kill Garland in the first 15 minutes of the game. But he actually gets sent back into the past by the four fiends and uses the power of the crystals to become Chaos and sends the four fiends into the future to send himself into the past - creating a time loop where he lives forever.

End game spoilers: The Warriors of Light eventually go back into the past and kick Chaos' ass which ends the time loop.
