Land is extremely in scarce in Singapore so the government only allows married couples to buy houses unless you're very rich and can buy private property (and by rich, i mean being at least a multi-millionaire) I was born and raised in the USA, but spent my high school and college days in the Philippines. So, I can personally attest that locals there and neighboring countries really have a hard time making a living from scratch.
