TopicWhy do white people wear shoes in the house?

I grew up in a highly rural area and we wore shoes inside during the day because there was no expectation we'd stay inside: you come in to use the bathroom, grab some water, maybe for a sandwich at lunchtime, but otherwise you'd go back outside to play/work/toil. If your shoes were spectacularly dirty, you'd take them off at the door, but if they were just a regular amount of dusty or leafy, you just wouldn't go into the nice parts of the house.

Taking shoes off at someone else's house was considered rude (or at least very juvenile --- kids could get away with it if all the kids were doing it). Hosting expected guests without shoes on was also rude.

I have no problems taking off my shoes if someone asks me to, but it's not my default. I don't care if people wear shoes inside my house unless they're very muddy or wet.
