sure, but that's not the point. you're not going to be able to break an instinct but you sure as hell should be able to tell the temperment of the animal.

i've had several dogs and after owning them for a while i knew their temperament well enough to know how they're going to react. for example i had a basset hound who wold have let a baby annoy the hell out of him with no reaction beyond a bit of crying; this was the same dog that would routinely crack cow bone chewtoys so he knew how to be rough. in comparision i've got a whippet now who's a complete coward around new people and wouldn't bite a person out of anger; and i'd never leave him around a baby unattended because i've seen the way he plays with his toys.

a good owner will know their dog, and they will introduce their dog to their baby to see how it reacts. it takes time and care, and its obvious this guy didn't do that.
