I've called in for something similar (though mine was a knee issue and I let them know the day before that might not be able to make it due to it) after having to walk back and forth to work for 3 days straight with a job that requires me to up alot. Which likely turned out to be a good idea as that pain ended up lingering beyond those days (wore a slip on brace to protect it for a few weeks), and even after those weeks there were days it would flare up for about 2 months (thankfully ever since then I haven't had any issues).

Point is if the pain is enough that it feels like you might actually cause a significant injury if you keep pushing it, it's probably wise to take a day (maybe even more depending on how severe it is) off to rest it.
