I think Mario is the plumber of Video Games due to his long-lasting nature because of him being in games from Donkey Kong all the way to the present. Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Mario Bros, and whatnot were golden classics of the time. Pacman came first yes, but Mario had more games than Pacman did post-crash. He is credited for defining an entire console like the Famicom/NES. It's kind of like how joe the Plumber is the Plumber of Deranged right wing media.
