Just yesterday I was reading an article about the debate of teaching Japanese atrocities in WW2 in Japanese schools. Apparently many Japanese people are not taught very much about those atrocities (focusing more on ancient history), and kind of lack the context necessary to understand international tensions stemming from it.
It wasn't until 15 years or so ago that Japan recognized that the Rape of Nanking even happened.

South Korea has also protested the Mimizuka - a monument filled with 38,000 noses of Koreans stolen as war trophies in the 16th century - that the Japanese government either A. doesn't even know about the contents of, or B. believes it should be venerated to recognize the conflict of their ancestors.

They have a pretty fucked way of recognizing history that seems to intersect with arbitrary codes of honor.
