Even then they were kind of shit. The main difference is that, when you're younger and dumber, you actually believe the idea that the Oscars are an objective recognition of quality film-making, as opposed to an over-politicized circle jerk. So your memory of them is rosier than the reality actually was.

Right. You are tricked into believing in the prestige. You are told about memorable moments, of which maybe some are actually enjoyable (albeit scripted). And then we grow older, wiser, with our own sense of objectives.

Our generation in particular--the same generation being blamed for markets crashing that, to be quite honest, are overly expensive after considering inflation--wizening up to the Oscars not actually being a good reflection of filmmaking quality has resulted in less people watching each year. Like I recall passing some news on Reddit this morning about this year's being the lowest-rated in quite some time, or something like that? I feel like those who'd been duped for life are are gone or departing this mortal coil, while the rest of us are finally deciding, "No, we want actual quality, and good movies to watch, not a social gathering of self-absorbed movie makers rewarding themselves like that Obama meme."

That's how I'm seeing it right now.
