and let's not even talk about self-checkout. i've hated it in theory since before it became widespread - and now, having worked a couple 8-hour self-checkout shifts, i really hate it in practice. you're now one cashier watching 4 registers.
you go from doing absolutely nothing but thanking people as they leave, to trying to deal with one person who fucked up while another person is waiting for you because they tried to scan a coupon and it didn't work right and another person is mad as hell because they're just buying beer and have to wait for you to come enter their birthdate and another person is mad because they can't scan an item because they put their purse in the bagging area and the computer won't let them continue until they move it, meanwhile every machine is screaming 'please move the scanned item to the bagging area' and 'please place your [RED BELL PEPPER] in the bagging area'

you should move to germany
people here are so afraid of technology that the only 2 times i've seen self checkouts in my life were when i was in the uk and when i was in the netherlands
