If we take 2nd Amendment to the logical extreme, the idea that it's there to protect the citizens against a government turned tyrantical, then every day citizens should have access to the same tools of destruction the government has, up to and including nuclear weapons. Because in any other case, such as our current reality, the government would just roflstomp us. The 2nd Amendment as potential protection from the government is an illusion that the government wants you to buy into, because they know in reality it has no power against them and it keeps most people distracted arguing about bump stock and clip size.

I said it in another topic though: the correlation between amount of guns in the U.S. compared to other nations vs. gun violence in the two is both unsurprising and staggering. But realistically, in a country as saturated with guns as the U.S., you would actively need to start taking guns away from people which isn't going to come without massive, violent civil unrest. And symbolically, surrendering all that power to an obviously corrupt government doesn't sit well to me. In general though, I do support lessening the amount of weapons in the world and I'm in favor of any willing disarmament on any level. I'm also in favor of gun safety education and training being taught in schools, starting as early as possible.

U.S. has a cultural sickness of glorifying violence, fetishizing guns, and discouraging mental healthcare for men. There's also a clear correlation between particular medications (many antidepressants and antipsychotics) and perpetrators of mass violence. Not to say that these medications cause that, because they seem to do fine for people in other countries, but it points to particular type of neurosis that is being developed and fostered in young, fragile, and unstable men. Robust and accessible mental health care is a necessity if this country ever wants to get better in a multitude of ways.
