One of the most common food dyes is carmine, also known as crimson lake, cochineal extract, natural red 4, and E120. It comes from the body and eggs of a tiny scale insect called cochineal which is a parasite of cacti.

Another common food additive is a resin called shellac. It's frequently used as a coating on candy and pills where it is known as confectioner's glaze or pharmaceutical glaze. It comes from a resin secreted by another scale insect called lac.
