The name just killed the whole brand from day 1. WWECW was really good once it found its groove in 2007 or so, its just it wasn't "ECW" and that really ruined it for a lot of people. Especially after WWE went HD and ECW just felt... wrong.

But the big stories on ECW were always great, probably because it was the 3rd brand and nobody cared. CM Punk chasing the ECW title, then that weird 3 months where every hoss in the company wanted the title, then Matt Hardy finally getting his chance at the top of the card, Christian's comeback and holding ECW together for a full year and putting over all the young talent that would theoretically be a big part of the future, Tommy Dreamer finally getting a real reign, it was all great.

If it had any other name, people would have much better things to say about it.

Was there any real ECW alumni left when WWE shut their vision of ECW down?

Tommy Dreamer was around for basically the entirety of WWECW, leaving WWE about 3 months before they ended it. in kayfabe he was retired by Zack Ryder.

Taz and Joey Styles were on commentary until early 2008 when Styles stopped commentating, and Taz stuck around until about 1/2 way through the year, but Dreamer was the only one around in 2009.
