It's still Mario, so it's something that the majority of Switch owners were likely to buy eventually, but as ports they probably weren't a priority purchase for people. Saying that you literally can't buy the collection unless you do it in this financial year makes buying ports feel like a priority for people, so they can get returns on the game as soon as possible, while also getting people who may otherwise have not picked it up to do so out of FOMO (the FOMO thing will also have helped the Fire Emblem game they ported - people who weren't sure whether to buy it because old-school FE may not be for them will have ended up getting it because they'd better pick it up while they can). --- ...
