Really just seems like rich people fad right in the middle of a pandemic when millions of others are struggling to survive. In a vacuum it "makes sense". When you look at art, most of the value to rich people comes from being able to say "I own this" since they're frequently loaned out to museums, most people are content to just look at a digital image or put a print on the wall, etc. So if the value of art is in ownership, the digital form of this is just NFTs.
